Abstract

"Cut warranty costs by reducing fraud with transparent processes and balanced control Warranty Fraud Management provides a clear, practical framework for reducing fraudulent warranty claims and other excess costs in warranty and service operations. Packed with actionable guidelines and detailed information, this book lays out a system of efficient warranty management that can reduce costs without upsetting the customer relationship. You'll dig into the whole spectrum of warranty fraud, from simple sloppy procedures to systematic organized crime, and get to know the fraudulent parties, the victims, as well as the objectives and methods of the fraudulent activities in different scenarios. You'll learn how to implement controls to detect and reduce fraudulent claims and decrease the overall warranty costs. The impact of fraudulent claims is plainly spelled out alongside detailed descriptions of typical symptoms and process gaps present in diverse companies. A comprehensive, multi-modal framework for robust warranty management is presented as a template for revamping your own company's strategy. Fraudulent warranty claims occupy an estimated 5-15 percent of the average company's warranty costs, which generally average between 1-4 percent of sales. Many companies are unaware of the issue or struggle to take action against the claims for fear of upsetting business partners, or because they lack tangible evidence. This book details a robust warranty control framework that institutes transparency and control over the whole warranty chain—supporting the process far beyond just fraud reduction. Understand the different actors (customers, service agents, warranty providers, etc.) and different forms of warranty fraud Uncover issues in your company's warranty processes Learn methods to detect and prevent fraudulent activities Implement a robust system of warranty cost control Warranty fraud is a major cost-control issue for most companies, but the sensitive nature of the topic leaves most reluctant to share their experiences and divulge their strategies. Warranty Fraud Management brings warranty fraud out into the open, and provides a clear, actionable framework for cost-savings through fraud reduction"-- Provided by publisher. "Warranty Fraud Management provides practical guidelines that help companies save money through reduction of fraudulent warranty claims and overbilling. For a typical manufacturing company the warranty cost varies between 1-4% of sales, so warranty cost as such is an important factor. For companies with outsourced warranty service we have seen fraudulent claims and overpayments extending to over 50% of the total warranty cost. Warranty Fraud Management will highlight the methods of fraud, ways to uncover issues and the importance of continuous improvement of the controls to keep up with the continuously evolving misbehavior. On the other hand, setting-up too rigid controls or warranty terms can impact customer satisfaction and increases overall cost in the warranty chain. The book will increase general awareness of warranty fraud -- how fraud is done, the impact of the problem, typical symptoms and process gaps we have seen in diverse companies. Additionally, it will provide a comprehensive framework for a solid warranty management capability -- there is no single silver bullet to tackle the problem but several areas need to be covered. The spectrum of warranty fraud is very wide, so the right type of actions also differs in different cases"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

Project managers appear to accept the 'iron triangle' of cost, budget and quality but in reality focus more on being on time and budget. Quality in projects is often paid mere lip service and relegated to tick-box compliance. This lack of clarity and focus on quality is often the source of project failures. Ron Basu's Managing Quality in Projects shines the spotlight on this aspect of project management that can often be overshadowed by the pressure to deliver on time and on budget. His investigation focuses initially on defining the dimensions of quality in project management and identifying sources of measurement for project excellence. Thereafter he expands his focus to discuss which tools can be effectively used in the quest for achieving and sustaining project excellence; and which processes are important in assessing the project maturity. The text also explores how the successes of operational excellence concepts, such as supply chain management, Lean Thinking and Six Sigma may be gainfully deployed in enhancing project quality and excellence. Finally a structured implantation plan guides those directly involved in project delivery, including suppliers, in how to 'make it happen'. A shared understanding and implementation of project quality by key project stakeholders will go a long way to ensuring a stable platform for delivering successful projects with longer lasting outcomes. It is also a fundamental building block in any organization's strategy for improving consistency and achieving sustainable performance. On that basis, Ron Basu's book is a must-have reference and guide for all project organizations.

Abstract

Quality is a discipline that focuses on product and service excellence. This book is about improving the quality of products and services. The improved quality and reliability lead to higher perceived value and increased market share for a company, thereby increasing revenue and profitability. The book discusses the concepts and dimensions of quality, costs of poor quality, the importance of quality in this highly competitive global economy, and quality programs--Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma that focus on improving quality in industries. The text integrates quality concepts, statistical methods, and one of the major tools of quality--Statistical Process Control (SPC)--a major part of Six Sigma control phase. A significant part of the book is devoted to process control and the tools of SPC--control charts--used for monitoring, controlling, and improving the processes by identifying the causes of process variation. The fundamentals of control charts, along with SPC techniques for variables and attributes, and process capability analysis and their computer applications are discussed in detail. This book fills a gap in this area by showing the readers comprehensive and step-wise solutions to model and solve quality problems using computers.

Abstract

This book introduces the concepts of Resilience-Based Design (RBD) as an extension of Performance-Based Design. It provides readers with a range of cutting-edge methodologies for evaluating resilience and clarifies the difference between resilience, vulnerability and sustainability. Initially, the book focuses on describing the different types of uncertainty that arise in the context of resilience evaluation. This is followed by an entire chapter dedicated to the analytical and experimental recovery functions. Then, starting from the definition of resilience provided by MCEER, an extension of the methodology is provided that introduces the seven dimensions of Community Resilience, summarized in the acronym PEOPLES. They are: Population and Demographics, Environmental/Ecosystem, Organized Governmental Services, Physical infrastructures, Lifestyle and Community Competence, Economic Development, and Socio-Cultural Capital. For each dimension, components and subcomponents are defined and the related indices are provided. Underlining the importance of the physical infrastructure dimension, the book provides several examples of applications for transportation, hydraulic, gas and power networks. The problem of interdependencies and the domino effect is also taken into account during the analysis. One of the book’s closing chapters focuses on different methodologies for improving disaster preparedness and engineering mitigation strategies, while the last chapter describes the different computer platforms available on the market for evaluating Community Resilience. The book offers readers an extensive introduction to the concept of Resilience-Based Design, together with selected advanced applications for specialists. No prerequisite knowledge is needed in order to understand the book, and the Appendix offers valuable supplemental information on e.g. the probabilistic concepts. As such, the book offers a valuable resource for graduate students, young engineers and researchers who are interested in the topic, and can also be used as a supplementary text in graduate level Disaster Resilience courses.
